DVD Catalyst is a software program that you can use to prepare DVD movies for formats supported by iPhone, PSP, iPod, iPhone, Zune and Omnia devices, among many others.
But the app can also convert common video types to those profiles. It supports several extensions for the input, such as AVI, MP4, MPG, ASF and WMV.
The interface of the application is not particularly user-friendly for individuals with less of no experience in similar tools. Loading video clips into the working environment can be done by using either the file browser, folder view or "drag and drop" method. It is possible to work with multiple items in a single session.
The file queue shows the number, type, duration, status, size and name for each item. The straightforward method to perform an encoding procedure is by specifying only the output directory, output filename and profile.
However, skilled users can fiddle with settings when it comes to the audio and video quality, screen resolution, audio language, cropping, deinterlacing, trimming, proxy parameters, minimization on startup, and so on. Plus, you can make the app automatically power off the computer when all tasks are done.
The video conversion tool requires a low-to-moderate quantity of CPU and system memory, has a good response time to key strokes and mouse events, swiftly finishes a task and delivers video clips with a good image and sound quality.
We have not come across any issues throughout our evaluation; DVD Catalyst did not hang, crash or pop up error dialogs. There's also a help file available. However, the interface of the tool could had been a bit more intuitive. Other than that, DVD Catalyst should please all users who want to convert videos, especially those who prefer rich features.
