Start Menu 8 brings back the Windows 7 Start Menu to Windows 8. It provides users with customization preferences to filter menu items, modify the user interface, and tweak font settings.
Once installed, modifications are automatically applied to the desktop, allowing you to access the Start menu. It is possible to change the Start button to one of the 22 options supplied by Start Menu 8, as well as specify custom images by replacing the install files (as described on the IOBit forum).
As far as the menu entries are concerned, you can disable Administrative Tools, Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, Computer, Control Panel, MetroApps, Setting, Device and Printer, and others, or show them as link or menu.
Additionally, Start Menu 8 enables user to change the user account picture, language, number of programs to display, skin (Windows 7 or 8 style), icon size, and power button action, as well as sort frequently used programs by name or last access time. As for the font, you can alter the size, color, and background color.
The application can be set to run at Windows startup, deactivate Metro hot corners and sidebar, and to open Metro on left click or Windows key press. Plus, you can establish hotkeys for accessing the Settings panel, hiding/showing the sidebar, switching to Metro, and for the Run command.
Start Menu 8 commits changes rapidly and without errors. It has a good reaction speed and uses very low CPU and RAM, so it doesn't affect the overall performance of the computer. We have not come across any issues throughout our evaluation, since the tool did not hang, crash or show error messages.
All in all, Start Menu 8 delivers a simple solution for reconstructing the Windows 7 menu in Windows 8, and it can be handled even by less experienced users.
