Total Commander is some sort of modern interpretation of the popular yet vintage Norton Commander. It comes with a new approach on Windows, relying on a two-panel interface that allows users to handle files in two folders at the same time, just like it happened on the MS-DOS tool.
Those looking for something more than Windows Explorer have already searched the web and most likely found a replacement for the old-school Explorer. Many have picked Total Commander and you should understand from the first day of using it why did that happen.
The way files are listed vary by users’ preferences, with shortcuts for every single operation that might pop into your head, starting with the common cut, copy and paste tools and ending with edit, create a new folder and rename.
But Total Commander has much more than that. It has a FTP client for accessing FTP servers in a matter of seconds, a multi-rename tool just in case you want to keep things organized, multiple network tools plus a gigantic settings menu that allows you to configure every single bit of the application.
Of course, Total Commander is able to handle archives too, so it can pack and unpack files in a matter of seconds as we’ve learned during our tests.
But probably the best thing about it is that this piece of software is so fast that won’t even notice the difference between opening a folder with 2 files and one with 300 files. While Windows Explorer is a bit slow when it has to index several hundreds of files, Total Commander is absolutely sensational and works extremely fast.
All these features come at a price though. In case you wish to purchase the full product, you’ll have to pay a pretty hefty price, but taking into account how powerful this is, it’s probably one smart investment.
