The Bittorrent protocol has grown a lot in the last couple of years, at least in popularity, more and more users choosing this file sharing method because of the advantages it brings in speed and functionality.
That’s the main reason why the software market is now full of Bittorrent clients, more or less efficient, supposed to help users download files at impressive speeds.
Vuze, formerly known as Azureus, is a bit different. It is a Java-based Bittorrent client, which means you’re going to need the Java Runtime Environment to run it, but at least as powerful as the majority of clients in this particular category.
Installation took a while during our testing, not only because we’ve picked to customize the installation, but also because the software kit attempted to deploy unnecessary apps on our computers.
Vuze Toolbar Remote and Norton Security Scan, both bundled into the installer, brought Vuze a not-so-proud ad-supported flag here on Softpedia.
Getting past the installer, you’ll have the chance to discover a very pleasant and modern interface. Although it’s full of powerful features, Vuze provides a nice way to interact with them, grouping them all in a separate list in the left part of the screen.
Plus, all downloads are listed right in the middle of the main screen, just like it happens with many other Bittorrent clients. Clicking on the Options button will open a whole new world: Vuze has a lot of options, and when we say a lot, we really mean it.
You can change settings regarding the connection, transfer, files, interface, plugins, security, devices and many, many other functions.
Functionality doesn’t seem to be that great though. Since it’s based on Java, it works a bit slower than the leaders of the Bittorrent clients category, with some minor issues when minimizing the main window. The download speed doesn’t seem to be that fast either, but this obviously depends of both your and the seeder’s Internet connection.
After all, if uTorrent or other similar clients have disappointed you so far, and you’re just looking for a simple and decent application, Vuze is worth a try. But don’t expect much, and you won’t be disappointed.
