Cheat Engine is an application that will help you cheat and modify games to your liking. It comes with lots of different tools.
a memory scanner enabling you to find values like health, ammo, positon, etc...
a runtime disassembler to show you the code being executed after being extracted
a debugger so you can step through the code step by step, or just gather specific data helping you pinpoint specific states to watch when hooking code.
A speedhack to increase the speed if the game is too slow, or decrease the speed if it's going too fast.
Direct x manipulation features to render your own gui inside the game, or do simple tricks like wireframe or z-buffer disabling. (Requires lua knowledge)
